Machine repair and maintenance
I repair and maintain CNC machines, including Haas, as well as industrial equipment, in my shop or on site.
What I do
- Repair and maintenance of CNC machines, including Haas.
- Diagnosis of servo motors and their drives (Electronics development and bench testing).
- Repair of industrial equipment, for example a laser cutter.
- Electrical work on machines, for example welding positioners, a rolling machine and a plasma cutting robot.
What I use
- 4-channel oscilloscope, 100 MHz
Examples

On-site rewiring of a servo motor connector, pin by pin.

Control computer of a wire EDM machine: new power supply on DIN rail.

Reproduction of an off-road vehicle chain tensioner: the copy on the left, the worn original part on the right.

Flanges machined to mount a grinding wheel on a band saw blade sharpener.
Refurbishment of machines bought out of service
- My shop's Haas TM-1 mill, bought out of service, sold as a parts machine: low-voltage power supply (5 V and 12 V) and battery replaced, parameters restored, complete disassembly, cleaning, inspection and lubrication, wireless probing installed. Later, a spindle encoder alarm: encoder recalibrated with the oscilloscope and reinstalled, in one morning instead of a one- to two-week wait to replace it.
Power electronics and controls
- For a toolmaking shop, maintenance and repair of five Charmilles Robofil wire EDM machines (290, 300, 310, 500 and 510): linear scales and power supplies of the console computers replaced or repaired, cutting speed maintained by replacing the table and ground cables, and the contactors, leaking batteries replaced with external batteries. A Robofil bought for parts by the same shop is running again.
- Kitamura machining centres: on a Mycenter-1, spindle drive output module replaced, and the spindle, which had stopped, turns again; on a Mycenter-0, tool changer drive replaced, and machine commissioned on 240 V single-phase through a rotary phase converter (motor selected, capacitors calculated). Power supply of a Haas TL-2 lathe replaced at a client's site.
- Repair of a laser cutter and diagnosis of servo motors, for a welding and metal fabrication shop.
- For the same welding and metal fabrication shop, a Fanuc robot teach pendant that had fallen, with its housing broken at the connector location: disassembled, cleaned, housing rebuilt and reinforced with epoxy, then tested, without buying a new pendant or housing. A storage box, added to the robotic plasma cutting cell, protects the pendant.
Mechanics and lubrication
- Haas TM-1: distribution-block lubrication instead of a poorly distributed centralized lubrication, spindle converted from grease to air-oil lubrication and raised from 4000 to 6000 rpm. Kitamura Mycenter-1 with corroded flat ways, remachined to accept linear rails; tool changer of a Mycenter-0 readjusted. Robofil brushed motors rebuilt, brush holders redesigned in 3D for maintenance, motors recalibrated to their original performance.
Modernization
- For a sharpening shop, the original computer of an AKEMAT U4 machine, faulty and obsolete, replaced with an off-the-shelf computer without buying the manufacturer's; software reinstalled and validated. CRT monitors replaced with LCD monitors on Robofil, Haas and AKEMAT machines. Control of a saw blade welder replaced with a controller: Electronics development and bench testing.
Relocation and return to service
- Mitutoyo coordinate measuring machine, when it was bought: prepared for transport with its original locking clamps, moved by forklift, reinstalled and running again; obsolete computer replaced, software reinstalled and validated, switch to a touch screen.
- For the welding and metal fabrication shop: relocation, upgrade, reliability improvements and follow-up with reports for a robotic plasma cutting cell (Fanuc robot, Hypertherm HPR260XD plasma power supply).
Machine safety
- For the welding and metal fabrication shop, zone-based protection on two plate rolling machines, machines that are difficult to safeguard: laser sensors stop the machine when an operator gets too close, and an indicator light shows the zone in green, yellow or red.
